Congratulations to the Theatre team for their being named runner up at the Class 5 Region A Championship. Congrats to Maddie Alspaugh and Nikki Flood for being nominated for top performances and to Mackenzie Sheppard, Emma Cox and Laura Brooks for being named All-Region actors.

The NRHS Beta Club competed in its state convention last week Hampton, VA. Many of these winners are no eligible to compete in the National competition in Savannah, GA this summer.  Congratulations to the following:
Division I Math: Marianna Ponce – 3rd Place
Division I Social Studies: Dylan Wyer – 3rd Place
Division II Language Arts: Kayla Bissette – 2nd Place
Division II Science: Harrison Storms – 2nd Place
Brandon Eley received a state scholarship.
The campaign skit received 3rd Place.
Our scrapbook received 4th Place.
Harrison Storms was noticed by a Beta talent scout and received a golden ticket to perform at Nationals in Savannah this summer.

Nansemond River High School will hold its African-American History Month Program on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 7:00 pm. Please see Mr. Woodis, Ms. Porter or Ms. Beverly for a free ticket.

Ever wanted to be in a musical? NRHS will be holding auditions for The Lion King Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28 from 3:15 – 5:30 pm. You must sing a 60 second selection of a Disney song. See Dr. Neighbours for more information.

Governor’s School students will NOT be reporting to GSA on Monday, February 19. They are to report Block 5, attend lunch with their scheduled Block 5 class and return back to class after lunch. During Block 7, GSA students should report to Ms. Burch’s study hall in room 100.

AP Testing will take place in May! This is a reminder that AP request for financial assistance forms are due to Mrs. Lascano in Guidance by Friday, February 16. Turn in your form if you are requesting a fee waiver for free/reduced lunch. Access Foundation fee assistance or Suffolk Education Foundation financial assistance.

Congratulations to the following NRHS singers for being named alternate in their respective voice parts to All State Choir:  Adriana Roman, Janelle Atkins, Isiah Branch and Noah Maddrey.

A special congratulations to Felicia Josey for being named to the All State Choir. This is the 12th year in a row that NRHS has had a member of the State Choir.  Congratulations Felicia!

Congratulations to our Boys’ Basketball teams for their wins over Great Bridge last night. The JV won 78-60, and the Varsity won 81-59. We would like to congratulate Senior Basketball players, Josh Hale, Gerard Stringer, Pheldarious Payne and VJ Wilkins, on their careers here at NR. Also, we would like to extend a big thank you for the Senior support personnel, Trinity Anderson, Courtney Samuels, Jessyca Barnes and Makiah Peden, for their help with the basketball program.

10th and 11th Graders who are attending the Career Field Trip tomorrow: please be dressed in your professional attire when you arrive to school. You will be released from class at 9:45 am to leave for the trip. Men should wear a shirt and tie with dress shoes, and ladies must also be dressed appropriately. Please do not bring book bags and other items on the trip. We will return to school by 11:50 am.

Congratulations to all of the artists who were selected to the Exhibit of Excellence at the Suffolk Art Gallery. Special congratulations go out to Seva Karlov and Madison Seely for receiving honorable mentions, Sydney Gregg for the Jurors Choice Award and Sydney Kania for winning 1st place!

Wednesday, February 14 is Tobacco Free Spirit Day, a day to celebrate school divisions across Virginia that have committed to being completely tobacco free! Stop by the 24/7 table in the Cafeteria to participate in fun activities and for the chance to get some free stuff. These activities are being sponsored by the Y Street Program and DECA.

There will be a football team meeting immediately after school on Wednesday, February 14. All graduating seniors are welcome to attend.

The CTE Non-Traditional Extravaganza Trip for 10th and 11th graders is Thursday, February 15, 2018. There are still seats left so you can still turn in your permission slip to room 123, your English teacher or your CTE teacher ASAP. Permission slips are due Wednesday, February 14.  Snacks will be provided for those attending. Remember that those going on the trip must be dressed professionally. No sneakers or jeans will be allowed so plan to dress for success.
